Basic Sciences

Departments and Centers

The Loma Linda University School of Medicine is divided into clinical and basic science departments. The basic science departments offer graduate study programs in anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology and molecular genetics, pharmacology, and physiology. Anatomy is a division of the Department of Pathology and Human Anatomy. The remaining graduate degrees are offered by the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology and the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. Many of the faculty within these departments are also members of research centers including the Center for Perinatal Biology, the Center for Neurosurgical Research, and a newly created Center for Health Disparities Research. Graduate students may also conduct their research in the laboratories of researchers at the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial VA Medical Center who hold adjunct appointments in a basic science department. A combined degree program, which allows students to earn both the PhD and the MD degree, is also available.
