The Initiative for Maximizing Student Diversity (IMSD) program is an educational training program funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), National Institutes of Health (NIH). The funding of this program has allowed LLU to establish a comprehensive research training program in the basic science departments of Loma Linda University School of Medicine (LLUSM). The goal of the program is to increase the diversity among students obtaining PhD degrees in the biomedical sciences. The IMSD program started giving awards to outstanding minority students in the summer of 2001. This comprehensive program provides support to highly qualified undergraduate, graduate, and medical students from underrepresented groups in the biomedical sciences at Loma Linda University.
The IMSD program provides full support for PhD and MD/PhD student participants. IMSD fellows are awarded a research assistantship in the amount of $22,500 a year for living expenses, plus all tuition and student fees. The award is renewable yearly contingent to successful progress in the graduate program. LLU-NIH IMSD fellows at Loma Linda University participate in well-structured educational enrichment and scientific activities to develop necessary skills to be successful scientists.
IMSD fellows are required to participate in the IMSD program enrichment activities including submitting an NIH pre-doctoral proposal in the area of his/her research dissertation to compete for extramural scholarship support.
The IMSD program will consider applications of students that are accepted into the LLU School of Medicine Integrated Biomedical Graduate Studies (IBGS) PhD program. It is important that students apply concurrently to the IMSD program and the Integrated Biomedical Graduate Studies PhD program.
