The Times They are A-Changin'
Curricular Innovations across the Continuum
Come to the 2006 WGEA Regional Conference and as a community of educators let us discuss and share ideas and experiences regarding curricular changes at all levels of medical education: CME, GME, and UGME. The conference theme is The Times They are A-Changin'. Included in the program will be sessions of interest for both WGEA and WGSA members. The Asilomar Conference Center provides an ideal location for the ongoing intellectual exchange necessary for optimizing medical education in the 21st century. Plenary speakers will include Dave Davis, John Russell, LuAnn Wilkerson, Al Manetta, Michael Wilkes, and David Irby. There will be two poster sessions, oral presentations, and a number of workshops. The AAMC will provide an update of current activities and hot issues.
Registration for the conference is $175. Aceteva will be handling the conference registration online. The deadline for registration is Monday, April 3, 2006. Registration will close on April 3, 2006. Late registrations will be processed at Asilomar. There is a $100 late fee for registration after April 3, 2006. To pay by check before April 3, make it out to WGEA and send to Raymond Wong, MD, at Room 1501, LLUMC, Loma Linda, CA 92354. Please send a copy of the Conference Registration form (Word .doc) and note the instructions included on the form. Students may register at the time of the meeting for $50 with no late fee.
Lodging will be at the Asilomar Conference Center and includes all meals. Please complete our Housing Registration form (Word .doc) and either mail or fax to the Asilomar Conference Center directly. There is a $100 fee for registrants who choose to attend the conference but stay off grounds. You are strongly encouraged to stay on-grounds at Asilomar, as this enables us to have access to better meeting room space.

Special event will be held on Monday evening May 1 at 8 p.m. A local actor, Keith Decker, will present a dramatization of the life of Robert Louis Stevenson. Stevenson, a Scottish poet/writer, spent some time in the Monterey area. A reception will follow. Come and enjoy the fun. The special event is included in the conference registration fee.
MERC workshops will be offered on Sunday, April 30 before the start of the conference. The planned workshops are 1) Basic Statistics and Data Management and 2) Questionnaire Design and Survey Research. Registration is through AAMC. CRIME will be meeting on Sunday, April 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Further information will be coming.
The California Consortium for the Assessment of Clinical Competence has invited Kathy Cole-Kelly, MS, MSW, from Case Western Reserve University to present a workshop on assessment and remediation of student communication skills. This workshop will take place from 1:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 30. Registration for the WGEA Conference is not required. Ms. Cole-Kelly has extensive experience in the development of her school's health communications curriculum, in evaluation and assessment of communication skills, and in remediation at all levels of physician training and practice. Participation is limited: faculty from CCACC schools please RSVP to nheine@llu.edu while faculty from non-CCACC schools who have experience with a high-stakes Clinical Performance Exam may request to attend by email to mdprislin@uci.edu.
