Visiting Alumni Across the Nation
Several times a year, my wife and I, along with Treva Webster (Assistant Dean for Development and Alumni Relations) meet with LLU School of Medicine alumni in various places across the nation and even in Canada! Most recently, we met with alumni groups in Seattle, Nashville, New Orleans, and Washington DC. There are already plans to go to Salt Lake City, St. Helena, Berrien Springs (Andrews University), and Orlando. Some alumni have never returned to campus since they graduated many years ago and are very interested in hearing about favorite faculty, curriculum, students, campus growth, and even the spiritual concerns of our students and faculty. This re-connection with alumni is important to the future well-being of our school. If you know of alumni, previous faculty members, or other friends of the School of Medicine in the areas where we will be visiting, please tell Treva Webster (twebster@llu.edu ), and she will be sure to give them a special invitation on your behalf.
Life Expectancy at Birth Improving
Data released by the National Center for Health Statistics shows that U.S. life expectancy at birth inched up to 77.9 from the previous record, 77.8, recorded for 2004. The increase was more dramatic in contrast with 1995, when life expectancy was 75.8, and 1955, when it was 69.6. The improvement was led by a drop in deaths from heart disease and stroke. Life expectancy for women continues to be five years longer than for men.

Congratulations to our School of Medicine Faculty
Dr. Danilyn Angeles , Assistant Professor of Physiology, received notice from the NIH that her study proposal has been funded as an R21 grant. The project is entitled: Procedure-Related Pain and Hypoxia in Premature Neonates. The study will determine whether procedural pain increases biobehavioral markers of pain. The purpose of her work is to develop better methods for the prevention of long-term morbidity associated with neonatal pain and hypoxia. Congratulations to Dr. Angeles and her team that includes Danilo Boskovic, Larry Sowers, Steve Ashwall, Doug Deming, Andy Hopper, and Elba Fayard.Dr. Wolff Kirsch and his research team on the recent grant from Stanley Medical Research Institute for the project entitled "Identification of Biomarkers in Schizophrenic Sweat," Dr. Lea Lynch on her recent Department of Defense grant for the project entitled "DISCOVERIES: Telemedicine Solutions for Emergency Care and Disaster Response," Dr. Lora Green on her recent Department of Energy grant for the project entitled "The Contribution of Tissue Level Organization to Genomic Stability Following Low Dose/Low Dose Rate Gamma and Proton Irradiation," Dr. Daila Gridley on her recent Department of Energy grant for the project entitled "The Cell Gene Expression and Function in Response to Low Dose and Acute Radiation," and Dr. Denise Bellinger on her recent National Cancer Institute grant for the project entitled "Mechanisms of Psychosocial Influences of Prostate Cancer."
