Examination policy
Students are required to take examinations at the scheduled time. Students who arrive more than 15 minutes late to an examination will be denied entrance. Students who arrive after any other student has left the exam for any reason will not be permitted to take the exam. For National Board subject examinations, students will be denied entrance once the examination has started.
Examinations will not be extended beyond the announced termination time even if a student arrives late.
Missed examinations
- Should a student miss a midterm examination because of an “excused” absence, the examination cannot be made up at a later time. Instead, the comprehensive final examination in the course for which the missed exam occurred will be weighted an amount extra, proportional to the weighting of the missed exam(s). In addition, course directors may require other remediation at their discretion.
- Should a student miss an in-house final examination because of an “excused” absence, arrangements must be made with the course director(s) of the missed exam(s) to make-up the missed examination(s). The course director(s), at his/her discretion, may require the student to take an examination that is different in format, content, or length from the final examination that was administered to the class.
- Should a student miss a National Board Subject Examination because of an “excused” absence, the student will be allowed to make up the subject exam upon completing all other coursework for that year at the end of the academic year. Arrangements for the make-up exam must be made through the Office of Medical Student Education.
Conditions to be met for an “excused” absence
- In order to have an "excused" absence, the student must get a written excuse from the Office of Medical Student Education (Dr. Werner) prior to the administration of the test in question. Students missing exams for health reasons must provide written documentation from Student Health that they are indeed ill. Whether or not this documentation is an adequate excuse for missing a test will be left to the discretion of the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Student Education. Once a request for an exam excuse has been received, Dr. Werner’s office will determine whether or not the student will be required to make up the exam at a later date (generally within a week of the missed exam) or have the final exam count an extra amount proportional to the missed exam. Under no circumstances are students allowed to take exams early.
- In the event of a bona fide emergency, where prior approval is not feasible, Dr. Werner’s office must be contacted as soon as possible at (909) 558-4255. Failure to do so will result in an unexcused absence.
- Students who miss examinations without prior approval from Dr. Werner’s office have an "unexcused" absence. As a result, the student will receive a zero for the missed exam(s).
Repeating a course
Missing more than one exam in any course or combination of courses could result in a student having to repeat the course(s) during the next academic year.
