Biographical sketch

Elizabeth Johnston Taylor, PhD, RN, is an Associate Professor at the Loma Linda University School of Nursing. Her clinical experiences as an oncology nurse created for her a deep interest in the relationship between illness and spirituality. In 1992, she earned her doctorate in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania where she focused her studies on the psychosocial and spiritual aspects of living with illness. Her expertise in researching spirituality and health-related quality of life was further developed during a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the UCLA School of Nursing. In addition to academic studies, she has obtained two units of Clinical Pastoral Education and training in spiritual direction.

Dr. Johnston Taylor has received funding for her research and training from the National Cancer Institute (NIH), the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, the John Templeton Foundation, the Oncology Nursing Society and ONS Foundation, and the Hospice Nurses Association. She has numerous publications, including articles and book chapters on topics such as quality of life, ethical decision making, pain management, and spiritual responses to illness. Her book, published by Prentice Hall, is titled "Spiritual Care: Nursing Theory, Research, and Practice."

Dr. Johnston Taylor's service to her professional community has included stints as a member of the Oncology Nursing Forum and Holistic Nursing Practice Editorial Boards, as a collateral reviewer for Sigma Theta Tau and Oncology Nursing Foundation research grants, as President of the Iota Lambda chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, and as Coordinator for the ONS Spiritual Care Special Interest Group.

Although Dr. Johnston Taylor loves her scholarly activities, they are now balanced greatly by her role as a mother. She and her husband, Lyndon, have two daughters -- Kathryn (5) and Elissa (4), who are teaching her much about being a human with spiritual needs!
