Dr. Lois Van Cleve is an Emeritus Professor of Nursing. During her years of being Associate Dean for the Graduate Program in Nursing at Loma Linda University, she began research and scholarly work concentrating in the area of pediatric pain management. Her work has advanced knowledge of infant and children's responses to painful procedures as well as the understanding of pain in the population of children with leukemia. Since 1993, Dr. Van Cleve's publications have addressed many aspects of pediatric pain including testing of the body outline, pain assessment tools for children, pain assessment and treatment of the hospitalized neonate, and pain in children with leukemia. Her work has included translation of pediatric pain assessment tools into Spanish. In her efforts to articulate the universal problem of pediatric pain management she has reached an interdisciplinary audience in many countries around the world. Currently she is the PI for a study: Quality of Life in Children with Advanced Cancer funded by the American Cancer Society and National Institute of Nursing Research.

Due to her leadership in graduate program development, Dr. Van Cleve has received invitations to consult on curriculum in countries within Asian and South America where graduate education in nursing is in the early stage of development. She has a record of service with Sigma Theta Tau International, The Society of Pediatric Nursing, The Southern California Cancer Pain Initiative, and the International Association for the Study of Pain.
