Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) - Gamma Alpha Chapter

Excellence in Education Award

The purpose of this award is to recognize members who spend a significant portion of their professional career involved in educating clinical nurses or nursing students and best demonstrate the values established by Sigma Theta Tau International. Gamma Alpha members may apply or may nominate another member. The nominator completes the bottom portion of the application form (to be completed before other documents are procured).

A certificate recognizing excellence as a nursing educator and a check amounting to annual membership will be presented at the annual induction ceremony.

  1. Eligibility for the award
    1. Be an active member of Gamma Alpha chapter of STTI
    2. Be involved in the education of student nurses or staff nurses
  2. Application to include
    1. One (1) application form on first page
    2. One (1) copy of the applicant's current resume or curriculum vitae.
    3. Two (2) letters of support from colleagues who evaluate teaching skills.
    4. One (1) letter from someone in a supervisory capacity.
    5. Third-party (peer or student) evaluations of teaching methods
    6. Documentation of the following criteria (maximum 3 pages, double spaced):
      1. Superior achievement (examples include):
        1. Recognized as an exemplary educator in planning and implementing teaching plans
        2. Uses current research in application of teaching skills
        3. Demonstrates breath of knowledge in performance of teaching/learning content
        4. Utilizes teaching/learning theories
      2. Leadership qualities (examples include):
        1. Serves as a role-model or mentor for learners and colleagues that inspires learners in the practice of nursing
        2. Promotes learning in the classroom and/or health-care environment to enhance patient care
        3. Demonstrates facilitation of learning through effective written ideas and oral communication
      3. High professional standards (examples include):
        1. Applies and encourages critical thinking in the learning environment
        2. Participates in the development of standards for teaching/learning
        3. Uses ethical principles in teaching/learning
        4. Facilitates collaboration with colleagues
        5. Promotes and facilitates nursing research for the advancement of education
        6. Communicates theory and innovative concepts
      4. Creative work (examples include):
        1. Develops creative approaches to teaching/learning content
        2. Adapts content to meet multicultural and other diverse learner needs
        3. Supports educational creativity
        4. Incorporates learning theory into teaching
      5. Commitment to the profession (examples includes):
        1. Is active in nursing organizations
        2. Contributes to the operation of the institution through active participation in committees and other work groups
