Mission & objectives
The mission of the international mentorship program is based on the vision and mission of Loma Linda University International Nursing Council. The University, the School of Nursing, and the Medical Center view the whole world as an area of service. The shared vision is to empower nurses in all countries to make a positive difference where they are. The objectives of the program are as follows:
- To offer nurses around the world an opportunity to visit Loma Linda University and develop clinical expertise and curricula that will meet their health-care needs. To provide mentoring in a clinical/teaching area of choice. To provide links to resources that will enable international nurse colleagues to move forward in their home context.
Programs available
Two programs are offered to further this mission. Applicants can request up to one academic quarter of experience.
The clinical mentorship program is designed to enhance clinical expertise in an area of choice. For acceptance into this program, attendees must meet the following criteria:
- Be sponsored by a health-care facility outside of the United States.
- Have a minimum of two years nursing experience.
- Be competent in spoken and written English.
Objectives: clinical mentorship
- Demonstrate clinical and psychosocial skills in the care of patients and families.
- Describe the pathophysiology of selected illnesses.
- Demonstrate appropriate nursing management of patients with a variety of health needs.
- Compare standard and updated technologies.
- Examine current issues in professional nursing.
The teaching mentorship program is designed to enhance the role of teaching faculty. For acceptance into this program, attendees must meet the following criteria:
- Be sponsored by a school of nursing outside of the United States.
- Currently be a faculty member.
- Be competent in spoken and written English.
Objectives: teaching mentorship
- Observe current teaching strategies in classroom and clinical settings. Compare and contrast teaching methods between countries. Compare and contrast methods of student evaluation. Engage in professional interchange of ideas. Explore curriculum development and evaluation.

Payment information/requirements
- Mentorship cost: $1,500 for three months (one academic quarter)--requests for shorter periods of time will be considered and prorated. Limited scholarships may be available.
- Learning objectives/goals for the mentorship program must be submitted with application.
- Academic quarter schedule:
Winter quarter - Early January through mid-March
Spring quarter - End of March through mid-June
Summer quarter - Clinical Mentorship Program only (end of June through mid-September)
Fall quarter - End of September through mid-December
- Application should be submitted at least 10 weeks prior to the program start date to allow time for invitation and appropriate visa to be obtained.
- The enrollee is personally responsible for all living expenses while at LLU/LLUMC.
- Upon request, LLU/LLUMC will assist you in finding living accommodations.
- An evaluation of the mentorship experience is required from participants at the end of their program.
- A certificate will be presented upon completion of the program. Academic credit is not included.
