Global Partnerships in Nursing for Wholistic Nursing Care‹Chiangmai, Thailand (August 10-12, 1999)


The first in the series of three international conferences on Global Partnerships in Nursing for Wholistic Nursing Care was held in ChiangMai, Thailand with open invitation to nurses from three divisions (Southern Asia, Northern Asia Pacific, and Southern Asia Pacific) including Australia. Fifty three nurses from some 14 countries attended. The conference was organized by Pat Jones, Lois VanCleve and Nelia Wurangian, faculty of Loma Linda University and were assisted by local organizers appointed by Dr. Siriporn Tan, President of Mission College and Director of Nursing in Bangkok, Thailand. Organizing faculty members, including Patricia Pothier, LLUSN faculty were also presenters in this conference.

Program notes:

The first day of the conference featured Dr. Patricia Jones as keynote speaker during the opening ceremonies. Dr. Siriporn Tan's Cultural aspects of wholeness introduced the topic of the afternoon where speakers from different cultures discussed cultural perspectives of wholeness.

Lunch hours were reserved for Lunch & Learn workshops on library and Internet skills given by Nelia Wurangian, LLU library faculty and nursing library liaison.

The conference continues to day two where participants explored common elements of wholeness and issues related to wholistic nursing, while the final day focused on nursing research with øshow & tellÓ poster exhibits to give everyone a chance to showcase research projects. SDA Nursing Leaders in Asia in the 21st Century was the subject of the closing panel discussion in the afternoon, finally ending with a climactic dinner and impromptu cultural performances where all attendees had a chance to participate in the fun.
