LLU Libraries - How to search the catalog on the Web

Online catalog via the web

In this help sheet find out about:

Click on the Catalog button in left column to enter the catalog. The catalog contains information on books held at the Del E. Webb Memorial Library, Jesse Medical Library and Information Center, and campus satellite libraries. Use the Catalog to see what books the Library has and whether they are checked out. See what books you have checked out and when they are due. "Browse the stacks" online. There are seven basic ways of searching plus special features as outlined below.

Catalog search methods

 Click inside the box(es) provided
and enter search terms:

Keyword search - Use this option when you know a few words of the title, but don't know the first word or the exact order of the title words. Type distinctive words from the title, contents notes, or organization name.

To broaden a search, use or asthma or hay fever
To narrow a search, use not Mexico not new
For word variations, use the truncation symbol * rehab*
You may use nested Boolean expressions (teeth or tooth) and extract*

Author search - Type the last name first
You may also type the names of health professionals, organizations, and government bodies

Exact title - Use this option when you know the exact title of a book. Must start with the first title word.

Medical subject - Use for health related topics. Use terms from the National Library of Medicine's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). Type all or part of the subject heading. Also try general subject.

General subject - Use for non-health topics. Religion and some social and behavioral science literature would be sports best searched this way. Use terms from the Library of Congress Subject Headings. Type all or part of the subject heading. Also try medical subject.

Call number - Type as much of the call number as you know.

Catalog special features

Browsing the stacks online - once an item is retrieved through one of the above methods, click on the "hyperlink" for the call number. A list of items nearby on the shelf will be displayed.

Show similar items - once an item is retrieved through one of the above methods, click on a "hyperlink" for one of the subjects to display items cataloged on the same subject.

Limit/sort - initial searches may be limited by material type, year of publication, language, location of item, and words in the author, title, and subject.

Placing an interlibrary loan

Any LLU/LLUMC affiliated user can submit their own requests via the Web for Interlibrary Loan of any item not owned by the Del E. Webb Memorial Library. Follow the steps below:

1) Make sure your information is in the library system. If you have recently checked out a book we should have a patron record for you. If not, contact the circulation desk at (909) 558-4550.
2) Go to the library web site at http://library.llu.edu/ and click on the Catalog button.
3) Click on Place an Interlibrary Loan Request.
4) Select the format you would like to request on loan: Book, Journal Article, Proceedings of a Conference, Dissertation/Thesis, Video Recording or Government Document/Technical Report
5) Provide all of the information requested in the form
6) In the boxes provided, fill out your name, Barcode number (on the back of your ID card), and your PIN number. If you don't have a PIN number, assign yourself one. You'll be prompted to enter it twice.
7) Click on the "Submit this Request" button.

Circulation functions

Checking the status of an item - When an item's record is displayed it includes a table listing where the book is located, what the call number is, and whether it is available for checkout. It the item is checked out, the due date will display:

Location- When the words under the column "Location/Floor map" are highlighted (underlined), a description is available of where an item is physically located. Click on the highlighted word to see the location description and floor map.

Viewing your circulation record - from the top level page of the catalog, click on the hyperlinked words "View your circulation record". On the screen that appears, enter the following information in the boxes provided then click on button to display record:

YOUR NAME

Barcode

Pin

Renewing items that you have checked out - When viewing your circulation record (as instructed above), you may renew one or all of the items you have checked out by clicking in the appropriate box.

Placing a hold on an item - After doing a search, if you retrieve a record for an item that is checked out, you may place a hold by clicking on the button that says place hold and then entering the information as requested (your name, barcode, and pin).
