How to find research articles in CINAHL

The following tutorial demonstrates an easy step for finding research articles in CINAHL.


1. Use publication type limit: 'research'

  • Enter your topic in the search box
  • Select the appropriate default field
  • Set the publication type limit to "research"
  • Execute your search
  • Print/save/email your results
  • Cancel your limit

EXERCISES:

Find research article on mortality resulting from diabetic coma.

Tip #1 : Two main concepts are: diabetic coma AND mortality, both terms are major (MW) terms in the controlled vocabulary.

Process:
1. Enter diabetic coma in your first box
Set the default to (MW) Word in subject heading
2. Using the Boolean AND, enter mortality in the second box
Set the default to (MW) Word in subject heading
3. Set publication type limit to: research
4. Run your search
5. Print/save/email your results
6. Cancel your limit

Tip #2 : When you know the type of research you're looking for, you may enter this as a search term. In this particular search, we will use epidemiological research as a search term. Types of research methods are indexed as minor (MW) subject headings in the thesaurus.

Process:
1. Enter diabetic coma in your first search bar
Set the default to (MW) Word in subject heading
2. Using the Boolean AND, enter mortality in the second search bar
Set the default to (MW) Word in subject heading
3. Using the Boolean AND, enter epidemiological research in the third search bar
Set the default to (MW) Word in subject heading
4. Set publication type limit to: research
5. Run your search
6. Print/save/email your results
7. Cancel your limit

Tip #3 : Using thesaurus term in your searches is unforgiving. It implies that you must know exact thesaurus wording to use in your search. If you are unsure of your terms, always begin your search using the keywords. When you find a citation that matches your search to a tee, display the record and pay attention to the hyperlinked thesaurus terms on the record. To do more searches, simply click on the terms you selected, and you'll never go wrong.
