How to find research articles in PubMed
The following tutorial demonstrates how to find articles about research on a certain topic in PubMed.
Unlike CINAHL where ‘research’ is offered as one of the LIMITS; in PubMed, ‘Research’ is a main concept
- Enter your topic in the search box
- Use the Boolean AND to add the ‘research’ concept
- Execute your search
- Print/save/email your results
Exercises:
Find a research article about mortality resulting from diabetic coma
Tip #1: Three main concepts are: diabetic coma, mortality and research
Process:
1. Enter
diabetic coma AND mortality AND research
2. Run your search
SEARCH NOW
Tip #2: When you know the type of research you're looking for, you may enter this as a search term. In this particular search, we will use epidemiological research as a search term. Types of research methods are indexed as minor (MW) subject headings in the thesaurus.
Process:
2. Search epidemiological research
SEARCH NOW
Tip #3: Now combine the two searches you have just done to combine the two concepts using the Boolean AND operator. You do this by selecting HISTORY on the menu bar. In this search, your #1 posting is for diabetic coma AND mortality, your #2 posting is for epidemiological research.
Process:
1. Select
HISTORY 2. On Search box, enter #1 AND #2
3. Run your search.
SEARCH NOW
