Microsoft Office: It’s Not Magic!

Course Description:
This session will introduce fundamental as well as complex concepts and functions in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Attendees will gain working knowledge and functional skills in word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation tools.

Felicia Chao graduated from Mt. San Antonio College with Academic Distinction in 2000 and transferred to Loma Linda University (LLU) where she proceeded to graduate Summa Cum Laude with her Bachelor of Science in Health Information Administration in 2002. She obtained her RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) credentials shortly thereafter and completed her Master's in Health Information Systems (MHIS) at LLU in 2004 while working as the Health Information Manager at the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System. She has served on the Board of the Inland Area Health Information Association (IAHIA) as President-elect in ’05-’06, President in ’06-’07, House of Delegates member, and also as past Newsletter Editor. She currently serves on the Board of IAHIA as Past President and is a member of the 2008 CHIA Convention Planning Committee. She is currently the Compliance and Privacy Officer at the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System and involved in regional and national VA projects, as well as a contract instructor at LLU’s School of Allied Health Professions (SAHP) where she teaches Medical Terminology, Computer Applications, and Compliance. Felicia is also CBEST certified, bilingual, and a vegetarian.

Autism: A Journey Toward Independence

Course Description: Attendees will be introduced to the core symptoms of autistic spectrum disorders and become familiar with the journey the individual, family, and multidisciplinary team encounter towards facilitating functional independence. Participants will be engaged in a dynamic presentation, which includes case studies and a learning lab component. A special interest section of this course focuses on the occupational therapist’s role in identifying appropriate assessments, adjunct treatment strategies, and formulating age appropriate occupational based goals in a team approach model.

Instructor: Tammy D. Modisette, OTR/L
Tammy Modisette graduated magna cum laude from Loma Linda University’s Occupational Therapy program in 1993. Her experience includes neurology, orthopedics, and autistic spectrum disorders. Tammy lectures and provides consulting services across the country to parents, educators, and healthcare professionals in the area of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). She is the founder of "Families First Occupational Therapy and Educational Consulting." She is currently pursuing a post-professional MA in Occupational Therapy at San Jose State University. Tammy resides in Monterey, California, with her husband and four children; the inspiration for her business is her son with autism.

Orthopedic Upper Extremity Top 10

Course Description: Discussion of the diagnosis and management of the Top 10 elective neuromusculoskeletal disorders in the upper extremity.

Course Objectives: Become familiar with the evaluation and current orthopaedic surgical management of the most common elective upper extremity problems including rotator cuff disease, acromioclavicular joint arthritis, tennis elbow syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, de Quervain’s disease, carpal tunnel syndrome, thumb basilar joint arthritis, ganglion cysts, Dupuytren’s contracture, and trigger digits.

Musculoskeletal Imaging Ultrasound for the Physical Therapist
Jerrold Petrofsky, PhD, JD and Michael S Laymon, PT, DSc, OCS, CCD

Course Description:
This introductory course presents basic examination of ultrasound imaging relevant to medical screening of musculoskeletal injuries and dysfunctions. Brief comparison to cardiovascular imaging will also be identified.

The instructors will discuss tissue differences between muscles, ligaments, tendons, and articular cartilage and help participants to recognize artifacts related to musculoskeletal ultrasound. Scanning workshops will support more detailed review of rotator cuff injuries and glenohumerol pathologies through real-time imaging of the shoulder and discussion of imaging protocols.

Instructors: Dr Petrofsky, PTA, JD, PhD in Physiology, taught at the Ohio State Medical School and the University of California between 1970 and 1992. His clinical career includes Director of the National Center for Rehabilitation Engineering, and workshop presentation on Legal issues in clinical practice.

He has published more than 350 articles in peer reviewed medical journals and is the recipient of several academic awards including “Distinguished Professor” at Azusa Pacific University and “Teacher of the Year” at St. Louis University.

He is currently Professor and Director of Research Laboratories at the School of Allied Health Professions at Loma Linda University.

Dr. Michael S Laymon PT, DSc, OCS, CCD is Professor and Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy at Azusa Pacific University. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, given multiple presentations and is the recipient of the 2007 “Distinguished Alumnus” in Physical Therapy at Loma Linda University.

  1. Discuss the physics of ultrasound and imaging fundamentals for musculoskeletal (MSK) imaging.
  2. Identify the normal anatomical appearance of muscle, tendon, ligament, nerve, fat, skin, blood vessels, and bone during MSK imaging.
  3. Explain the capabilities and limitations of MSK ultrasound imaging.
  4. Identify the sonographic appearance of commonly seen pathology in MSK
  5. Discuss the indications /findings for MSK sonography in physical therapy applications.
  6. State the indications and benefits of MSK ultrasound for physical therapy medical screening and sports medicine injuries.

Extremity Joint Mobilization for the Non-Orthopedic Specialist

Dr. James M. Syms PT, DSc, ATC, SCS, CSCS

Course Description
This basic course is designed for the physical therapist that has had minimal formal training in performing joint mobilization techniques. It is ideal for the therapist who has practiced in the non-orthopedic setting and wishes to update their clinical skills to include extremity joint mobilization. The course should also serve as a refresher course for the physical therapist who is re-entering the workforce or has not recently practiced in the orthopedic setting.

The course will be presented with lecture-demonstration and laboratory activity. It will present the biomechanical and neurophysiological basis for extremity joint mobilization and provide the participants the opportunity to practice their hands-on skill with direct instructor supervision.

Dr. James Syms, PT, DSc, ATC, SCS, CSCS, has taught in the entry-level physical therapy and physical therapist assistant programs for 17 years and continues to practice in the orthopaedic and sports physical therapy settings. He has studied and taught orthopaedic physical therapy internationally in Canada and South America. He has held a full-time teaching appointment at Loma Linda University for 15 years, and holds an adjunct faculty appointment as Coordinator of the Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, California. He has been a guest lecturer of orthopaedic physical therapy at the Universidad del Salvador in Buenos Aries, Argentina; and at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California.

Provide a background of orthopaedic physical therapy and discuss the various contentions that occur in contemporary orthopaedic physical therapy.

Present the components of orthopaedic physical therapy manual treatment.

Provide the basis for accurate joint testing application and assessment for the treatment of orthopaedic dysfunctions.

Attendee Objectives:
Understand the basic principles of manual mobilization examination and treatment.

Perform examination on joints of the extremities for assignment of hyper/hypomobilities.

Identify relationships between osteokinematic and arthrokinematic motion. Recognize contraindications to manual extremity mobilization treatments.

Identify the indications/benefits of manual extremity mobilization.

Begin basic palpatory skills pertinent to the clinical use of manual extremity mobilization.

Establish appropriate treatment planning activities for extremity joints based upon examination findings.

Identify and integrate safe and effective handling and manual skill applications during the performance of extremity joint mobilization treatment applications.

Applications in the Clinic: A Focus on Gait from Pediatric NDT Perspective
Lauren Beeler PT, PCS NDTA Coordinator Instructor

Course Description:
This 1 ½ day intermediate clinical reasoning course will provide participants with opportunities to enhance observation and clinical reasoning skills related to functional gait limitations in children with neuromotor problems. Video observation of gait of children demonstrating some common compensatory movement strategies will serve as the basis for analysis and clinical reasoning.

Treatment strategies targeted to improve functional gait related outcomes by addressing inefficient and ineffective posture and movement will be the focus of labs which are practiced with other course participants. These principles and strategies apply to adolescents and adults with neurologically based motor impairments.

The course format includes observation of video clips with guided clinical reasoning discussions and movement lab activities for the participants. Emphasis is placed on clinical reasoning and group discussion.

Lauren Miller Beeler P.T., P.C.S. is an NDTA Coordinator Instructor for the Neuro-Developmental Treatment/Bobath Eight-Week Course in the Treatment of Children with Cerebral Palsy. She is the co-owner of a multi-disciplinary pediatric outpatient practice, The Children’s Therapy Center, in Orange County; CA. Lauren graduated from PT school at Indiana University. She has been teaching courses related to NDT since 1989. She is an APTA Board Certified Pediatric Clinical Specialist and has a diversified background in pediatrics.

Course participants will have the opportunity to:

Describe posture and movement observation and analysis skills as applied to gait in children with neuro-motor conditions within a Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT) framework.

Identify and discuss multiple hypotheses regarding impairments and external influences that contribute to motor performance seen in children with neurological dysfunction during gait and other locomotor activities.

Integrate clinical reasoning skills to use as a basis for more effective “hands on” intervention through a process, which involves identification of posture and movement problems, developing hypotheses regarding impairments, which influence performance of functional gait related activities and contribute to participation restrictions.

Apply Neuro-Developmental Treatment skills during movement practicum with other course participants.

Medical Screening for Medical Referral

Course Description
This basic course is designed for the physical therapist working in both direct access and non-direct access environments. It covers non-musculoskeletal disorders that may present as musculoskeletal pain. The course also covers “red flags” and rationale for medical referral. The course will be presented in 50 percent lecture - 50 percent laboratory activities to include visceral palpation and cadaver visceral anatomy review.

Instructor: Everett B. Lohman III, PT, DSc, OCS, is a professor at Loma Linda University where he has worked for 10 years, and is an adjunct faculty at Azusa Pacific University. Dr. Lohman has worked in the orthopedic physical therapy setting for 18 years and has published several related articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is currently the director of the Post-Professional Physical Therapy and Orthotic & Prosthetic programs at Loma Linda University. He is the coordinator of the orthopedic curriculum for the physical therapy programs at Loma Linda University.

Management of Traumatic Brain Injury in School Age Children
Course Description: This course will cover the mechanisms of Traumatic Brain Injury and types of injuries to be expected after TBI in school age children. The course will then review the Ranchos Levels of Cognitive Functioning - Revised and how to utilize them to develop IEPs and intervention strategies within the school. Finally the course will discuss behavioral patterns, and ways to modify these patterns, that teachers, parents and therapists can expect in the classroom and at home.

Instructor: Martha S. Burns, PhD
Dr. Martha S. Burns has been a practicing speech language pathologist in the Chicago area for 35 years. She serves on the Faculty of Northwestern University, department of communication sciences and disorders, and on the medical staff of Evanston-Northwestern Hospital, both in Evanston, Illinois. Dr. Burns has received honors from Northwestern University, Evanston Hospital Corporation, the American Speech Language Hearing Foundation and St. Xavier University. Doody’s Rating Service selected her book on Right Hemisphere Dysfunction published through Aspen Press as one of the best health sciences books of 1997. In addition to that book, Dr. Burns is the author of a book on aphasia and the test Burns Brief Inventory of Communication and Cognition published by The Psychological Corporation. She has also published numerous articles on language development, language disorders, auditory processing disorders, and adult neurological disorders in professional journals. Dr. Burns is currently serving as senior clinical specialist and Director of Professional Relations at Scientific Learning Corporation.
