Physical Therapy - Directed Study: AHCJ 699
The individual arrangement for advanced students to study under the guidance of a faculty member is called directed study. It may include directed reading, literature review for a special project of a planned community project to enhance learning in a particular area of interest. A post-professional DPT student may register for no more than six units of directed study/special project to count toward the degree. A minimum of thirty hours of independent work is required for each unit of credit (e.g., 3 quarter units = 90 hours total). The directed study form must be completed giving a specific title for the study. Objectives to be achieved are to be written under the description. The date for completion of the directed study is also stated. The time frame may cover several quarters in which case the student will receive an IP (In Progress) until finished, providing there is progress toward the objectives. It is recommended that the post-professional DPT student complete the directed study within two quarters. The final grade is satisfactory or unsatisfactory (S or U).
Students are advised to register for no more than 3 units of directed study at any one time. More than three units requires permission of the advisor, program director, and the post-professional DPT department chairman. Difficulty in getting a required course is not sufficient reason to request a teacher to assist with directed study for the course. The director will help locate an alternate course. Directed study is completed when the student presents a log of the hours and the written report, paper, etc. to the instructor and it is considered satisfactory. It is within the prerogative of the teacher to conduct oral inquiry about the study. Students doing directed study should schedule appropriate contact hours with the instructor. It is the responsibility of the student to arrange for this.
