School of Allied Health Professions

Associate of Science in Medical Radiography

The application window for the AS in Medical Radiography program is from January 1, 2009 to May 1, 2009.

Becoming a Medical Radiographer

Medical Radiography students practice positioning skills on each other.

A medical radiographer--also known as a radiologic technologist or X-ray tech--is responsible for the accurate demonstration of body structures on an image receptor, such as x-ray/radiographic film or a digital imaging monitor. The technologist determines proper exposure factors, manipulates medical imaging equipment, evaluates the radiographic image for quality, and provides for patient protection and comfort.

The radiologic technologist frequently assists the radiologist in specialized procedures. These procedures often require the administration of contrast agents or the use of fluoroscopy for enhanced viewing.

Purpose of Medical Radiography Program

The Medical Radiography Program within the School of Allied Health Professions seeks to support Loma Linda University's mission of "To Make Man Whole" by providing a well-rounded educational experience for its students. Upon completion of all the academic and clinical requirements, the student receives an associate in science degree in medical radiography and is eligible to take both the state (CRT) and national (ARRT) board exams.

The Curriculum

The Medical Radiography program offers various ways to learn, from online, to lab, to group projects, to classroom lecture.

The A.S. in Medical Radiography is a 21-month program. Student involvement during the program is 40 hours a week, mainly during regular daytime hours.

The first quarter of the program provides students with the basic principles and procedures of diagnostic radiography. Some courses include web-enhanced learning methods.

The following six quarters are divided between academic instruction and intensive clinical experience at local hospitals.

Clinical Training

Students gain valuable experience from their Clinical Instructors.

Each student is assigned to an affiliated medical facility. In addition to Loma Linda University Medical Center, the program has clinical affiliates located in Loma Linda, San Bernardino, Redlands, Riverside, Hemet, Palm Springs, Apple Valley, Murrieta, and Imperial Valley. During the first quarter of the program each student will rotate to each site to determine their clinical site preference. By the second quarter students spend two days a week at their appointed clinical site. By the summer quarter students will spend four to five days a week in clinic.

Prerequisites

The classroom experience includes group projects, presentations, lectures, and labs.

To be eligible for admission, the applicant must have completed a minimum of 42 quarter units (or 28 semester units) at an accredited college or university. All grades must be a C (2.0) or better. See a list of prerequisites.

Career Observation

A minimum of 12 hours of career observation in a radiology department is required. Download a Career Observation Form from the forms page.
