Catalina backpacking
by Kathinka Salzmann, student activities volunteer

StudentsFriday 5th September, 9:30 a.m.

I am surprised that out of nine participants, I can only see two boys (and one of them is the person who organizes the trip!) I didn't expect that a seven-mile hike could scare boys away? But then again, I could be wrong.

As we drive out of Loma Linda in a packed van, contact is made easily with the other members of our great expedition and solidarity builds up immediately. The boat ride is pretty wavy and some of us get seasick.

From Two Harbors where the boat drops us, our hike to the wonderful beach of Parson's Landing finally begins. What a challenging experience! Three and a half hours later, just before sunset, we reach the beach and most of us jump into the Pacific Ocean's waves before even setting camp. Water can do miracles?

Saturday 6th September

Mostly spent on the beach and in the sea, we try to move the less we can (except for the crazy ones who decide to go for another hike!) A lot of us go snorkeling and even spot a sea lion. And here comes my second big surprise: squirrels manage to get into our tents and bags and eat most of the good stuff we brought? But we weren't done with surprises yet: Gemalli breaks her toe, Anna paints the landscape, and Buddy and Greg take pictures of their good friend and great adventurer Bruce-the-moose!! As night comes, we start a big fire and roast marshmallows under the stars.

Sunday 7th September

We get an early start, as our departure time is 9:30 a.m. The hike back to the boat seems to last forever, but it is a unique opportunity to test how helpful people can get when placed in unusual circumstances.

We had forgotten already, how far we were from the "civilized world"?and a good shower is the only reason for which we look forward to getting back home!

LLUSA officers' retreat
by Lisa Robinson, LLUSA public relations officer

The LLUSA officer retreat began at noon on Friday, September 19. The goal of the retreat was to bring the officers together as a team and have a little fun at the same time. Spending time at a Huntington Beach house was the perfect opportunity. The first team-building task was planning meals and grocery shopping for the weekend. Beach vespers was next on the agenda and even though the air was cold the atmosphere around the fire was warm. Leadership skills were tested in finding a can-opener so dinner could begin. The Sabbath brought the officers together as they cooked and shared more about themselves. Sunday was spent enjoying the heat at Magic Mountain. The retreat finished with a family style meal at Buca DiBeppo's.

LLUSA lunch on the lawn
by Lisa Robinson, LLUSA public relations officer

A sandwich, chips, and a drink for one dollar enticed 380 students to stop by Lunch on the Lawn. Before noon on Wednesday, September 24 the line was already forming. Hungry students came from every school to enjoy the affordable meal. The students had a chance to meet people from other schools, eat, and just relax.
