Students for International Mission Service (SIMS)

India by Grace Yuh, sophomore, School of Medicine

Grace Yuh served as a SIMS volunteer in the Eye Camp in India. Here she massages anesthetic into a patient's eye as the team prepares for surgery.
India·sacred cows, the Taj Mahal, Mother Theresa·these are a few of the things that came to mind when I first thought of going to this strangely beautiful land.

Since being there, I have developed a greater appreciation of this country. Not only are the cows sacred, but monkeys and elephants as well. Even some of the people claim to be gods, and sacrifice a goat and sprinkle the blood upon themselves to be purified from the defilement of human touch.

The Taj Mahal was a wonder to behold, but the Himalayas, a marvelous manifestation of God's handiwork, were even more awesome and breathtaking in beauty. They reminded me of the splendid power of our Creator and Redeemer.

I discovered there are many people committing their lives to selfless service in this land of people so filled with need.

The doctors and staff at Simla Sanitarium who worked so tirelessly and faithfully were a continual source of inspiration to me.

It was an incredible experience working alongside them in the Eye Camp, where we provided free eye examinations, medications, and cataract operations for nearly 600 people. It truly is more blessed to give than to receive; for in giving, we receive so much more than we ever dreamed was possible.
