
Program location
The state of Andhra Pradesh is situated on the Deccan (south) plateau, which is the oldest geological formation in India. The Godavari and Krishna rivers cut their way through this area from the Bay of Bengal. The history of this state dates back to 1000BC. The twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad make up the capital of Andhra Pradesh. There are both Hindu and Islamic influences within these cities.
Climate/weather
Andhra Pradesh has a typical tropical climatic condition. Summers are hot and in some places humid while winters are comfortable. The monsoon season spreads from the month of June to September with the average rainfall of 1000 m. The temperature during the summer ranges from maximum 33°C to 44°C and minimum 30°C to 19°C. The temperature during the winter season ranges from 27°C to 10°C.

Site size
The Giffard Memorial Hospital has approximately 100 patient beds of which 50 percent are regularly occupied. On average, the site sees 150 outpatients per day.

Languages
The official language of India is English. However, the primary languages spoken by the people in this area include Telegu and Hindi. All of the staff at the hospital speak English, but this is not necessarily true of the patient population.
Accommodations
Participants will be lodged in the hospital's guesthouse. Meals will be provided in the hospital cafeteria. However, if students prefer to cook their own meals or hire an individual to cook for them at home, this is also possible to arrange. The site has running water, and a laundry service is available. Drinking water must be boiled before drinking, or commercial drinking water is available for purchase (2 gallons for $1.00).
Transportation to site
Participants are responsible for arranging their own air travel to Madras, India. From there, SIMS and the hospital will work together to arrange transport from the airport to the site, which is located 600 miles away by car. Travel time to the site is estimated at 8 hours.
Eligibility
This site recruits students and professionals in the following health professions: medicine, dentistry, nursing, and laboratory technology. For other fields, SIMS must check with the site.
Program fee
Program fees include food, lodging, and transport from the arrival airport to the site. Program fees do not include air travel or personal travel while in the country. The following costs are based on a four-week stay and subject to change in conjunction with the site.
