
Program location
Belém, the capital of the State of Pará, is the largest city in northern Brazil with a population of over 1 million. It is considered to be the gateway to the Amazon region and it is also the chief port of the lower Amazon River. One of the most attractive cities in Brazil, Belém has numerous public squares and well-paved streets, many of which extend to the edge of the jungle.
Climate/weather
For the most part, Brazil has a humid tropical and subtropical climate. During the summer months, November through April, temperatures average between 79°-85°F. In the winter months of October through May, temperatures may fluctuate slightly. Humidity in Brazil is relatively high, particularly along the coast. The rainy season in the north is March through May. During this time, Belém experiences regular afternoon thunderstorms.

This hospital has 100 patient beds of which 75 percent are regularly occupied. The site sees an average of 80 outpatients per day, and the maximum group size is four.

Languages
The official language of Brazil is Portuguese and the majority of the population is monolingual. The influence of English words is observed primarily in technical and scientific fields. At this site, 20 percent of the staff speak English while only 2 percent of the patients speak English.
Accommodations
Participants will be housed in a guesthouse. Meals will be provided by the hospital and fresh food is available for purchase at local markets. Other amenities include running water and hot showers. In addition, the water is chlorinated and safe for drinking.
Transportation to site
Participants are responsible for arranging their own air travel to the international airport in Belem, Brazil. From there, the hospital will arrange transportation to the site which is located 10 miles from the airport. Estimated travel time is 20 minutes by car.
Eligibility
The hospital recruits students and professionals in all health-care professionals, especially the following fields: medicine, international public health, health promotion, and nutrition/dietetics.
Program fee
Program fees include food, lodging, and transport from the arrival airport to the site. Program fees do not include air travel or personal travel while in the country. The following costs are based on a four-week stay and are subject to change in conjunction with the site.
