Program location

Porto Alegre, the largest city in southern Brazil, is the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The city, located at the junction of five rivers, has become an important alluvial port as well as one of the chief industrial and commercial centers in Brazil. The city has a population of about 1,500,000 inhabitants.

Climate/weather

Brazil's climate varies from arid scrubland in the interior to the impassable tropical rainforests of the northerly Amazon jungle and the tropical eastern coastal beaches. The south is more temperate. Rainy seasons occur from January to April in the north, April to July in the northeast, and November to March in the Rio/São Paulo area.

Languages

The official language of Brazil is Portuguese and the majority of the population is monolingual. The influence of English words is observed primarily in technical and scientific fields. At this site, 10 percent of the staff speak English and 20 percent of the patients speak English.

Accommodations

Participants will be lodged in a hospital room. The hospital will provide a portion of the meals and participants will be responsible for their other meals. Fresh food is readily available for purchase from local sources and a cook can be hired if arrangements are made in advance. Other amenities include running water, hot showers, and the possibility of housecleaning help.

Transportation to site

Participants are responsible for arranging their own air travel to the international airport in Porto Alegre. From there, the hospital will arrange for transportation to the site, which is located 4 miles from the airport. Estimated travel time is 20 minutes by car.

Eligibility

This site recruits students and professionals in the following health professions: medicine, nursing, and physical therapy.

Program fee

Program fees include food, lodging, and transport from the arrival airport to the site. Program fees do not include air travel or personal travel while in the country. The following costs are based on a four-week stay and subject to change in conjunction with the site.
