Asamang Seventh-day Adventist Hospital

Program location

Kumasi is located in the rain forest region of Ghana and popularly known as the "Garden City" because of its many species of flowers and plants. The capital of the Asanti Region, Kumasi is the second largest city in Ghana. The city is located approximately 300 miles north of the equator on the Busumtwe River, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. While terrain surrounding Kumasi is relatively flat, the countryside is lush with tropical vegetation. Overall, Kumasi is a fast-growing, contemporary city.

Climate/weather

The climate of Ghana is tropical, but temperatures vary with season and elevation. Except in the north, two rainy seasons occur, from April to July and from September to November. Annual rainfall averages 2,100 mm in the rain forest region. In most areas, the highest temperatures of the year occur in March, and the lowest in August.

Asamang Seventh-day Adventist Hospital has 42 patient beds and the average occupancy rate is 90 percent. The hospital sees an average of 60 outpatients per day.

Program details

Languages

English is the official language of Ghana. However, the government endorses the use of nine other languages. At the hospital, 98 percent of the staff are English-speaking while only 45 percent of the patients speak English as their primary language.

Accommodations

Lodging will be arranged by the hospital. Participants will be housed in either a guest house or a hospital room. Other amenities at this site include running water and the possibility of hiring a cook. Meals are not provided; however, fresh food is available at the local market.

Transportation to site

Participants are responsible for all air travel arrangements. Participants will fly into Accra, Ghana’s capitol. From there, the hospital will arrange transport to the site, which is 160 miles north of Accra. The trip is approximately three hours by car.

Eligibility

The hospital has requested professionals and students in the fields of medicine, nursing, laboratory technology, medical records, and other non-health-related fields.

Program Fee

Program fees include food, lodging, and transport from the arrival airport to the site. Program fees do not include air travel or personal travel while in the country. The following costs are based on a four-week stay and subject to change in conjunction with the site.
