Program location

Gingoog City is located on the northeastern coast of Misamis Oriental, approximately 122 kilometers east of Cagayan de Oro City and 74 kilometers west of Butuan City. It is bounded on the east by the Municipality of Magsaysay Misamis Oriental, the province of Bukidnon; on the south by the Municipality of Claveria, Misamis Oriental; and on the north by Gingoog Bay. The population is approximately 87,530 people.

Climate/weather

The climate of the Philippines is tropical with an average year-round temperature of 32ºC (90ºF). Summer is from March to May and is always hot and dry. The average daily maximum summer ranges from 92 to 94ºF (33 to 34ºC). June to October is the wet season with monsoon rains and typhoons in most parts of the country. The coolest weather in the Philippines is from November to February, when the daily maximum is around 84 to 88ºF (29 to 31ºC).

Site size

This small hospital has 35 patient beds of which 65 percent are regularly occupied. The site sees an average of 15 outpatients per day.

Languages

The national language is Filipino, with English as the most widely spoken second language. All business, governmental, and legal transactions are conducted in English. There are over 100 regional languages in the Philippines. At the site, a majority of the staff and patients speak English.

Accommodations

Participants will be lodged either in the home of a staff member or in a hospital room. Meals will be provided by the site. It may be possible for participants to cook their own meals depending on their accommodations. Amenities at this site include running water and laundry service.

Transportation to site

Participants are responsible for arranging their own air travel to the international airport in Manila, Philippines. From there, the hospital will help students arrange travel from the airport to the site, which is located 920 miles from Manila. Students will either fly or take a boat to reach the site. Estimated travel time is three and a half-hours.

Eligibility

This site recruits students and professionals in the following health professions: physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, and other health and non-health related fields.

Program fee

Program fees include food, lodging, and transport from the arrival airport to the site. Program fees do not include air travel or personal travel while in the country. The following costs are based on a four-week stay and subject to change in conjunction with the site.
