Kendu Adventist Hospital

Program location

The small lakeside village of Kendu Bay is located in the Lake Victoria region of Western Kenya. Lake Victoria is the second largest freshwater lake in the world, dominating this area with its 70,000 sq. km. surface. Although relatively tourist-free, Western Kenya is the most densely populated area in the country and also the most productive. The nearby town of Kisumu is the main town of the Western Highlands and it is the third biggest town in the country.

Climate/weather

Kenya enjoys a tropical climate. The sun shines all year and summer clothes are worn year round although the evenings and early mornings are cool. The country experiences long rains from April to June and shorter rains from October to December. The coldest months are July and August.

Program description

While at the site, students will participate in clinical rounds, participate in patient care (where appropriate), and visit outreach clinics. At these clinics, participants will assist staff in giving immunizations, and conducting health education classes. Students will also have the opportunity to observe surgery at the hospital and conduct home visits with hospital staff.

Site size

Kendu Adventist Hospital has 164 patient beds of which 80 percent are regularly occupied.

Program details

Languages

The official language of Kenya is Swahili. Other languages spoken include English and Luo. At this site, 90 percent of the hospital staff speak English while only 30 percent of the patients speak English.

Accommodations

Lodging will be provided by the hospital. Students will be housed in either a hospital room or a guest house. Please note that meals are not included. Participants are welcome to purchase vegetarian meals at the hospital's cafeteria or buy food at the local supermarket. Participants also have the option of hiring a cook to make their meals during their stay. Other services at this site include running water and electricity.

Transportation to site

Participants are responsible for making their own air travel arrangements. Participants will fly to the Nairobi International Airport. From there they will fly to Kisumu. After arriving in Kisumu, participants will be transported by car to the site, a drive of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Transportation from the Kisumu Airport to the site will cost the student approximately $20.00 and will be arranged by SIMS and the site.

Eligibility

This site specifically requests physical therapy, lab tech, and medical records students. In addition, the hospital accepts the following types of students and professionals: medical, nursing, respiratory therapy, and non-health related fields.

Program fee

Program fees include food, lodging, and transport from the arrival airport to the site. Program fees do not include air travel or personal travel while in the country. The following costs are approximate and subject to change in conjunction with the site.
