Program location

Penang has long been known as a beach paradise, the "Pearl of the Orient." Although the city is growing and expanding rapidly, Penang still retains much of the beauty and quaintness. Economically, Penang is one of the big powerhouses in Malaysia due to its connection with the mainland via the Penang Bridge, one of the longest bridges in Southeast Asia.

Climate/weather

Penang has an equatorial climate, which is uniformly warm and humid throughout the year. There are no recognizable hot or cold seasons although September to November may be considered the wettest months.

Program description

The program at Penang Adventist Hospital is sculpted as much as possible to fit students' learning needs as well as their skill levels. Students are required to submit a current curriculum vitae (CV) in order to participate at Penang Hospital. The Penang Medical Education Committee will review students' CVs and draw up an appropriate program.

Site size

The Penang Adventist Hospital is a busy hospital with 212 patient beds of which 80 percent are regularly occupied. The site sees an average of 500 outpatients per day.

Languages

The official language of Malaysia is Bahasa, which is most commonly spoken by the people. English, however, is also widely spoken. At the hospital, all hospital staff speak English and approximately 60 percent of patients speak English.

Accommodations

Participants will be housed in a guesthouse or an apartment directly opposite the hospital. Students will be responsible for purchasing and/or cooking their own meals, and cooking help can be arranged. A wider variety of food options are available in restaurants located off the hospital campus. Fresh food for cooking is also available for purchase locally, and drinking water is chlorinated. Amenities at this site include running water, air conditioning, and hot showers.

Transportation to site

Participants are responsible for arranging their own air travel to the international airport at Kuala Lumpur. From there students will take a taxi or public transport to the hospital. The hospital is located 20 miles from the airport, and travel time from the airport to the site is approximately 40 minutes by car or bus. Upon arrival at the hospital, students should go directly to the Front Office Help Desk and ask for the SIMS contact person. This person will show students where they will be lodged and help them become oriented to the hospital.

Eligibility

This site recruits students and professionals in the following health professions: medicine, dentistry, nursing, international public health, health promotion, and occupational therapy. Students in other fields are welcome but must check with the site first.

Program fee

Program fees include food, lodging, and transport from the arrival airport to the site. Program fees do not include air travel or personal travel while in the country. The following costs are based on a four-week stay and subject to change in conjunction with the site.
