Program location

Freetown is the capital of Sierra Leone. It is a costal city located on the country's western shore.

Climate/weather

Sierra Leone has a tropical climate with rainy and dry seasons. High humidity is common year round. The rainy season begins in May and lasts until November and is heaviest from July through September.

Program description

Site size

This is a large site with 200 patient beds, 95 percent of which are occupied. The hospital sees an average of 40 outpatients per day.

Program details

Languages

English is the official language of Sierra Leone. Other languages commonly heard include Krio and Mende, among many others. At this site, all hospital staff speak English while only 50 percent of patients are English-speaking.

Accommodations

Participants will be lodged in a guesthouse. Meals will be provided by the hospital. Fresh food is also available for purchase at the local market. Other services include laundry services and running water. Electricity is available sporadically.

Transportation to site

Participants are responsible for arranging their own air travel. Students will fly to Lungi Airport in Freetown. From there, the hospital will arrange transportation to the site, which is located 130 miles from the airport. Travel time to the site is four hours by car.

Eligibility

This site recruits professionals and students in the following fields: medicine, nursing, international public health, epidemiology/biostatistics, physical therapy, and laboratory technology.

Program fee

Program fees include food, lodging, and transport from the arrival airport to the site. Program fees do not include air travel or personal travel while in the country. The following costs are approximate and subject to change in conjunction with the site.
