Program location

Kigoma is the capital of the Western Region of Tanzania, located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. It is the terminus of the main railroad from Dar Es Salaam.

Climate/weather

Tanzania has a tropical climate. Late March through late May is traditionally the long rainy season and is considered the "winter period." June through late October is the dry season. Late October through December is when the short rains occur. These are usually in the form of daily thunderstorms. Mid-December through March is summer weather. It is dry and very warm until March.

Site size

The Heri Adventist Hospital has 97 patient beds of which 40 percent are regularly occupied. This site sees an average of 40 outpatients per day and the maximum group size is six.

Languages

The official language of Tanzania is Swahili (Kiswahili). English is the second official language and the country's language as well as the main teaching language for all the scientific subjects in secondary schools and higher education institutions. Arabic is widely spoken in the coastal areas, particularly in Zanzibar. At the site, 50 percent of hospital staff speak English while only 5 percent of patients speak English.

Accommodations

Participants will be lodged in a guesthouse. Meals are the responsibility of the participants. Many vegetables, fruits, cereals, and legumes are available cheaply at local markets. It may be possible to hire a cook to prepare meals. Other amenities at this site include running water and electricity (in the evenings).

Transportation to site

Participants are responsible for arranging their own air travel to the international airport in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. From there, SIMS and the site will arrange for travel by train to Kigoma. Travel time from the airport to the site is approximately two days.

Eligibility

This site recruits students and professionals in the following health professions: medicine, dentistry, nursing, health promotion, and laboratory technology. For other fields, it is necessary to check with the site.

Program fee

Program fees include food, lodging, and transport from the arrival airport to the site. Program fees do not include air travel or personal travel while in the country. The following costs are based on a four-week stay and subject to change in conjunction with the site.
