
Program location
Iringa is located in the Southern Regions of Tanzania. The city is 6200 feet in elevation and has a population of 142,600 people. This particular clinic is located on a 5000-acre farm occupied by four expatriate families. The families manage the medical/dental clinic, sawmill, gardens, and orchards as well as several church projects.
Climate/weather
Tanzania has a tropical climate. Late March through late May is traditionally the long rainy season and is considered the "winter period" in Tanzania. June through late October is the dry season. Late October through December is when the short rains occur. These are usually in the form of daily thunderstorms. Mid-December through March is summer weather. It is dry and very warm until March.

This site sees an average of 30 outpatients per day and the maximum group size is two.

Languages
The official language of Tanzania is Swahili (Kiswahili). English is the second official language of the country as well as the main language of commerce, science, and teaching in higher education institutions. At the site, 100 percent of hospital staff speak English while only 5 percent of patients speak English.
Accommodations
Participants will be lodged in either a guesthouse or a mission home. Students can hire a cook to prepare their meals as meals are not provided by the site. Fresh food availability is adequate but rather limited. Other amenities include running water, laundry service, and house cleaning help. Electricity is solar; however, not all houses have electricity.
Transportation to site
Participants are responsible for arranging their own air travel to the international airport in Dar Es Salaam. The site and SIMS will be responsible for arranging travel from the airport to the site. Participants will travel 360 miles by car or bus to the site, which includes one evening in a hotel.
Eligibility
This site recruits students and professionals in the following fields: medicine, dentistry, nursing, international public health, health promotion, laboratory technology, and other non-health fields.
Laboratory technology students are especially desired.
Program fee
Program fees include food, lodging, and transport from the arrival airport to the site. Program fees do not include air travel or personal travel while in the country. The following costs are approximate and subject to change in conjunction with the site.
