Program location

Jinja is Uganda's second largest urban center with a population of 500,000 people. It is situated on the shores of Lake Victoria, the source of the Nile River.

Climate/weather

Uganda enjoys a tropical climate. Due to the country's high altitude, temperatures in some parts of the country can be quite cool despite its position on the equator. There is heavy rain between March and May and between October and November. The dry season is December through February and June through late August.

Site size

This site has 60 patient beds, which are occupied 100 percent of the time.

Program details

Languages

English and Buganda are the official languages of Uganda. However, the native population more commonly speaks other languages such as Kiswahili, Lasoga, and Banyoro. At the Children’s Center, 70 percent of the staff are English speakers.

Accommodations

Participants will be housed in a 12-bed house for volunteers. Meals will be provided by the site. Fresh food is available for purchase at the local market. Other amenities include laundry service, running water, and cooking, and house cleaning help.

Transportation to site

Participants are responsible for arranging their own air travel to the international airport in Entebee, Uganda. SIMS will arrange for a taxi to transport the participant from the airport to the site. The site is located 124 miles from the airport and travel time is estimated at 2.5 hours.

Eligibility

This site recruits student and professionals in all health professions.

Program fee

Program fees include food, lodging, and transport from the arrival airport to the site. Program fees do not include air travel or personal travel while in the country. The following costs are based on a four-week stay and subject to change in conjunction with the site.
