Seminar overview

Dioxin is a persistent hormone-disrupting chemical that is causing an emerging problem. Dioxin has been associated with carcinogenesis, neurological and behavioral problems, diabetes, immunological problems, endometriosis, and numerous other disorders.

Intervention to reduce the waste stream that introduces dioxin into the environment is of utmost importance as a public health measure. In recent years, concern has been raised regarding potential adverse effects of dioxin, one of many environmental contaminants often called "endocrine disruptors."

Learning objectives
At the conclusion of this seminar participants will:
  • Understand the characteristics of dioxin and dioxin-like chemicals.
  • Understand the history of dioxin emission and exposure.
  • Understand the general effects on humans and animals.
  • Understand the specific human health effects and characteristics of dioxin exposure.
  • Develop an understanding of the mechanisms of effects:
    • Endocrine disruption
    • Carcinogenic
    • Teratogenic
    • Transgenerational
  • Understand the methods of risk and toxicity assessment.
  • Understand the sources of human exposure.
  • Understand the sources of contamination in the environment from dioxin, POPs, etc.
  • Understand the development of governmental guidelines and policy regarding dioxin and POPs.
  • Understand the individual, public, institutional responsibilities toward reducing the waste-stream of dioxin-source materials.
  • Understand preventive measures that individuals can take to reduce exposure.
