EPDM 509 Principles of Epidemiology 3 units
Overview
An introductory course in epidemiologic methodology that covers study design, measures of effect, measures of potential impact, validity, bias in biomedical studies, screening, confounding and interaction, and statistical inference. The course utilizes CD-ROM multimedia lectures, textbook readings, and web-based case studies on infectious disease outbreaks, cancer epidemiology, and cardiovascular disease epidemiology. Students are required to participate in web-based discussion groups where current research questions in epidemiology are investigated.
Prerequisite/Corequisite
Previous or concurrent enrollment in STAT 509 (General Statistics).
Topics
- What is epidemiology?
- Overview of epidemiologic research
- Study designs
- Measures of frequency; epidemics and modes of transmission of disease
- Measures of effect
- Measures of potential impact
- Validity
- Selection bias, information bias
- Screening
- Confounding and interaction
- Statistical inference about effect measures
Learner Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, the successful student will be able to:
- Develop a basic understanding of the study designs, measures of disease frequency, and measures of potential impact used in epidemiologic studies.
- Develop a basic understanding of principles of validity and bias (information bias and selection bias) and use these principles to critique studies.
- Develop a basic understanding of public health screening and screening used as a diagnostic tool in the clinical setting.
- Develop a basic understanding of confounding and control of extraneous factors in epidemiology and apply these principles to studies.
- Develop a basic understanding of principles of statistical inference: Hypothesis Testing, The P-Value, Confidence Interval, Chi-Square Tests, Large Sample Methods, Sample Size.
