GLBH/EPDM 561 - Epidemiology of Tobacco Use and Control--I (3 units)
This module-based course (the first of a 3-part series*)
- Presents a comprehensive overview of the tobacco pandemic and provides a foundation for understanding global/national tobacco prevention and control issues and strategies.
- Explores the epidemiology of this growing public health challenge and its significant impact on societal health and economics.
- Examines the underlying principles governing the multisectoral and multidisciplinary approaches developed as part of the coordinated public health response (within the context of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control).
- Introduces basic techniques of monitoring, surveillance and evaluation as used in tobacco prevention/control programs.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, the successful student will be able to:
- Understand the epidemiology, scope, dimensions and public health burden of tobacco use worldwide especially among certain high-risk groups (women, youth);
- Identify and describe the underlying principles of transnational tobacco prevention and control efforts in the context of the WHO Framework Convention of Tobacco Control;
- Define and develop the various key elements of a comprehensive, country-specific tobacco control strategy;
- Use tools to monitor and critically assess the effectiveness and impact of intervention strategies, policies and programs;
- Access and utilize information resources relative to the foregoing objectives listed.
