GLBH 517 Cultural Issues in Health Care - 3 Units
Critical analysis of broad socio-cultural and political forces that impact healthcare access and delivery domestically and internationally. Assessment of ethnocentric beliefs and attitudes that contribute to the gap between marginal populations and healthcare, and strategies of socio-cultural change within the context of power and privilege. Introduction to ethnographic methodology with field experience.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, the successful student will be able to:
- Assess cultural phenomena affecting health
- Describe worldview and how “otherness” is constructed and utilized
- Refer to current literature and research in the area of culture and health
- Assess own worldview, cultural assumptions, and cultural heritage
- Discuss ethical issues in planned socio-cultural change
- Understand the complexity and interaction between culture, health and illness
- Provide an ethnographic description of a selected population and/or social space
- Understand key issues of healthcare delivery, barriers, and strategies to overcome barriers
- Critically analyze and engage the literature in this area of study
