HADM 509 – Principles of Health Policy and Management

This course will introduce students to the concepts of the health policy process. Students will be familiarized with the current health delivery system with a focus on budgeting, quality outcomes, strategic planning, and marketing. Emphasis will be placed upon leadership and management skills necessary to navigate the necessary changes in the current health system.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, the successful student will be able to:

  • Identify current health policy issues.
  • Describe the components of the health delivery system.
  • Understand communication theory and how it relates to health policy and management.
  • Identify the legal aspects of public health.
  • Identify sources of resistance to change and explain how they might be overcome.
  • Describe the importance of information systems within health care.
  • Describe the role of health services marketing in the strategic planning process.
  • Identify the components of high-quality health care.
  • Compare the various control methods and explain the budgeting process and its relationship to planning and control.
  • Apply systems thinking to resolve the tension and challenges in health care.
