HPRO 509 - Principles of Health Behavior (3 units)

Principles of Health Behavior provides an introduction to key health behavior change theories and psychosocial determinants of health behaviors. This course provides an overview of motivation, stress and coping, addiction, and religion as related to health behavior.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, the student will be able to:

  • 1. discuss the relationship of psychological and environmental attributes to health behaviors.
  • 2. examine key theories of health behavior.
  • 3. describe the role of social and community factors related to public health problems.
  • 4. identify the causes of social and behavioral factors that affect health of individuals and populations.
  • 5. develop and implement an individual behavior change project.
  • 6. identify high risk situations that promote relapse and prevent behavior change maintenance.
  • 7. describe and implement stress management techniques and explain their significance in the success of overall health behavior change.
  • 8. recognize the importance of social support in changing and maintaining a new behavior.
  • 9. explain the process of addiction to tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs and treatment of those health behaviors.
  • 10. describe factors that play a role in maintenance of weight loss and related behaviors (exercise, diet).
  • 11. discuss the role of spirituality and religion to health.
  • 12. critically examine the strengths and weaknesses of the cognitive behavior modification approach.
  • 13. apply ethical principles to public health education program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • 14. describe the benefits and limitations of social and behavioral science interventions and policies.
  • 15. specify targets and levels of intervention for social and behavioral science programs and/or policies.
  • 16. identify individual, organizational, and community needs and assets related to social and behavioral science interventions.
