HPRO 553 - Addiction Theory and Program Development
This course addresses the problem of addiction in our society, both the substance related addictions such as alcohol, marijuana, and smoking and the process addictions such as sex and gambling. The course will cover the mechanisms of addictions, the consequences, and the tools to prevention. Also, there is a practical component in the course where the student has to design a community based drug prevention program.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, the successful student will know:
- The definitions and general terms of the addiction field
- The mechanisms of action of the main addictive drugs
- The consequences of drug addiction
- The main current treatments for drug addiction
- The preventive methods for drug addiction
- About process addictions and their mechanisms
- How to design, implement, and evaluate a drug prevention program in the community
