STAT 515 Grant and Contract Proposal Writing – 3 units

Basic grantsmanship skills, sources of funding information, use of prospectus, and preparation of a competitive proposal for grants and contracts. Aspects of research design, objectives and methodology, data management, evaluation, budget development, and peer-review procedures applied to the preparation of an actual proposal.

Overview

This module-based course:

  • Presents an overview of the basic principles and practice of successful grantsmanship both from a research and programmatic perspective;
  • Provides a comprehensive understanding of the different processes, structures, factors and essential skills required when developing competitive proposals that are funded;
  • Describes the various key elements involved in proposal preparation such as identifying potential funding resources (government and private/foundations), formulating objectives, determining appropriate project/research design and evaluation methods, building budgets and sustainability plans, and understanding the grant review process.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, the successful student will be able to:

  1. Identify and access public/private funding sources and negotiate for grants/contracts.
  2. Justify and document the significance of problems/needs or research issues.
  3. State clear objectives/hypotheses.
  4. Design study methods, implementation plans and evaluation procedures.
  5. Collect, manage, analyze and present data in an efficient, appropriate manner.
  6. Develop and justify a budget.
  7. Understand the grant review process.

In short, the student will be equipped with the essential skills and knowledge to prepare a competitive grant in the areas of public health/clinical research or for service-related programs or projects.

Date and Time

This course begins July 26, 2007 with a Blackboard component. It also has an on-campus teaching session August 13-16 and 20-23. The course finishes August 31, 2007. On-campus sessions will meet 8:00-12:00pm each day with some group sessions to be scheduled in the evenings.
