Air quality engineer/scientist

  • Consults in the areas of air quality, regulatory compliance and permitting, acid rain mitigation, fuels and combustion, boiler performance, NOx reduction, jet and rocket propulsion. Devises new methods of reducing pollutant emissions. Involved in source testing, air quality monitoring and field testing of various devices.

Environmental engineer

  • A trained engineer with a college degree in environmental, civil or chemical engineering. Primarily involved in site assessments and audits, regulatory compliance and permitting, design and implementation of environmental and treatment systems.

Environmental scientist

  • Has a degree in biology, zoology or related science. Studies the effect of man-made projects on the flora and fauna of an area. Involved in the management and protection of the natural environment, environmental impact studies and reports.

Geologist

  • Specializes in the scientific study of the origin, history and structure of the earth. Typical functions involve field collection and analysis of substructures in the earth. Involved in drilling, site assessment and soil and groundwater investigation and remediation.

Hazardous waste engineer

  • A trained engineer with a college degree in chemical, civil, mechanical or environmental engineering. Specifically focuses on site assessments, remedial investigation, feasibility studies, design, implementation and construction of treatment systems for contaminated sties classified as dangerous to public health.

Health and safety specialist

  • Audits workplace safety and maintains compliance with federal, state and local regulations regarding the health and safety of employees. Assesses and implements the means to reduce risks associated with the work environment.

Hydrogeologist

  • Specializes in the geological design and evaluation of underground and groundwater flow contamination and water flow control.

Industrial hygienist

  • Specializes in the field of industrial health specifically oriented to the working environment as it affects man. This includes the study and control of occupational disease and other environmental factors affecting employee health.

  • Performs analytical testing on hazardous substances of regulatory and environmental concerns.

Process safety/risk management engineer

  • Usually a process engineer involved in studying the risk to a population's health resulting from the release of toxic chemicals or pollutants. Conducts hazard operability studies, writes risk management and prevention plans.

Regulatory compliance/permitting specialist

  • Primarily involved in monitoring and analyzing federal, state and local environmental regulations and assessing the impact on industry. Responsible for maintaining compliance with requirements of federal, state and local agencies as well as obtaining appropriate permits to operate.

Remedial contractor

  • Engineers/scientists engaged in the actual clean up of hazardous waste sites. Involves design, construction and installation of various treatment technologies such as vapor extraction, soil excavation and removal, bioremediation, removal and installation of underground storage tanks.

  • Involves the systematic management of solid waste materials including agricultural, commercial, hazardous, industrial, municipal and residential wastes. Involves landfill design and closure, resource recovery, recycling, land reclamation, incineration.

Water/waste water engineer

  • A civil, chemical or environmental (sanitary) engineer responsible for planning and design of waste water pump stations and chemical facilities for waste water collection, conveyance, treatment, and disposal. Also responsible for facility maintenance and performance.
