Dr. Uppala earned her PhD in biology with an emphasis in chemical carcinogenesis from Loma Linda University in 1991 and obtained postdoctoral training in environmental toxicology at the University of California in Riverside. Dr. Uppala taught at Atlantic Union College in Massachusetts and Oakwood College in Huntsville Alabama before joining the faculty at Loma Linda University School of Public Health. She served as the director of the environmental stewardship program and strategies for ecological education program while at Oakwood College. Dr. Uppala completed a Department of Defense sponsored breast cancer project titled "Biomarkers of Genotoxicity Induced by the Environmental Estrogen DDT" which focused on a minority population exposed to high levels of DDT.

Dr. Uppala received the Dean's Award for doctoral programs at Loma Linda University in 1991. She was awarded the Thomas and Violet Zapara Excellence in Teaching award in 1998, the Oakwood College President's Award in 2001, and the American Association for Cancer Research/HBCU Faculty Scholar in Cancer Research Award in 1998, 1999, and 2002. She is listed in the Marques Who's Who in the World 2000 edition, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in America in the 2001-2002 edition for her contribution to the society.

PhD Loma Linda University, biology (emphasis on chemical carcinogenesis)
Postdoctorate in environmental toxicology, University of California at Riverside

Research interests

Currently, research emphasis is in the area of breast cancer studying cell proliferation, chromosomal aberrations and gene expression in cells exposed to environmental toxicants. Other areas of interest include:

  • Environmental carcinogens
  • Endocrine disrupters and their role in cancer
  • Cytogenetics
  • Proteomic profiling of breast cancer biomarkers
