The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics although the science of epidemiology began with investigating infectious disease outbreaks, the modern epidemiologist is also concerned with heart disease, cancer, stroke, and injuries.
Epidemiologic research incorporates use of statistical techniques and an understanding of environmental, genetic, and social characteristics important in disease development and spread.
Students in biostatistics are prepared to participate in projects such as population surveys to estimate the health status of a particular community, studies to determine the relationship between disease and other factors, and clinical trials to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of certain new drugs or other treatments.
