Health Geoinformatics is an emerging discipline that uses a combination of scientific and modern geospatial technologies to investigate health issues by collecting, organizing, sharing, and presenting information about who we are, where we live, and how we live. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology enhances public health activities by providing a means to manage, share, monitor, plan, and integrate spatial information on the interactions between natural resources, environment, and human diseases. Its goal is to provide optimal solutions to the public's health and enhance the well-being of human populations and the quality of their environments.

Health geoinformatics influence effective decision making in several public health disciplines including:

  • Monitor health status to identify community problems
  • Diagnose and investigate health problems and hazards in the community
  • Inform, educate, and empower people about health issues
  • Mobilize community partnerships and action to identify and solve health problems
  • Develop policies and plans that support individual and community health efforts
  • Enforce laws and regulations that protect health and ensure safety
  • Link people to needed personal health services and assure the provision of health care when otherwise unavailable
  • Assure a competent public health and personnel health care workforce
  • Evaluate effectiveness, accessibility, and quality of personal and population-based health services.
  • Research for new insights and innovative solutions to health problems
