The Institute is primarily designed for health professionals and students who have completed a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. Qualified candidates must demonstrate computer proficiency, although no previous experience with GIS technology is required. Advanced placement can be considered for applicants with GIS experience/training. In addition, interested LLU students, staff, and faculty who would like to learn about GIS applications in health may also apply.
Students will receive instruction leading to a graduate certificate in the entire certificate program in health geoinformatics as outlined below. Participants can take all courses or as many courses as desired (up to 12 units). The program is divided into two sessions of five weeks per session.
A one-week break between the sessions allows for leisure activities or time to complete required assignments. Among other activities, the institute will feature field trips to the ESRI International User Conference in San Diego and the ESRI campus in Redlands.

To earn the CHG, students must successfully complete at least 23 academic units as listed below. Core (C) requirements include courses in the two main areas of GIS fundamentals and techniques (16 units) and Health Geographics Electives (E) (at least 4 units). In addition, 3 units of Public Health ethics are required. Students who successfully complete the CHG during the summer institute will also receive a free copy of ArcView software with some extensions (Courtesy of ESRI® ) and free student licenses of the TerraSeer Space-Time Analysis Suite (courtesy of TerraSeer®).

About LLUSPH health geoinformatics programs
Loma Linda University School of Public Health has demonstrated leadership in the health geoinformatics field by achieving three important geographic information system (GIS) educational "firsts." In 1996 School faculty designed and taught the first graduate-level GIS course offered at a U.S. School of Public Health. This was followed by launching the country's first health geographics bachelor's degree in 1998. A graduate level certificate in health geoinformatics, designed to complement existing degrees offered as professional continuing education, was subsequently approved by the University and has been offered since autumn 2004.
The Loma Linda University School of Public Health geoinformatics laboratory is part of the Del E. Webb Memorial Library complex on the University's main campus. The laboratory is available to students in both degree and certificate programs for instruction and research. The spacious facility is equipped with 20 high-end, networked PC workstations. Each is furnished with state-of-the-art ArcGIS software and extensions. The lab also furnishes printers, scanners, and GPS.
Location: The Geoinformatics Laboratory is located within the Del E. Webb Memorial Library, giving students easy access to the extensive resources available to the University's eight health sciences schools. Click here to see map.
