Chronic disease
- More than 17 million Americans have diabetes, and over 200,000 people die each year of related complications. Costs related to diabetes add up to nearly $100 billion annually.
- Cardiovascular disease costs us an estimated $300 billion per year. Hypertension, obesity, and diet are some of the leading risk factors.
- More than 500,000 Americans die of cancer each year. Cancer costs us an estimated $180.2 billion. Many types of cancer may not be inherited but may be linked to environmental factors including tobacco smoke, chemicals, dietary habits, and viral infections.
