Dan Buettner, author of new book The Blue Zone, recently made a return visit to Loma Linda—one of four places in the world he featured in this book about longevity.

While here, Mr. Buettner held a book signing, was interviewed during services at Loma Linda University Church, and visited with individuals profiled in the Loma Linda chapter of The Blue Zone.

Mr. Buettner also sat down April 28 to discuss his findings about longevity with Renate Krause, PhD, of the School of Public Health. Their interview was filmed and later aired during the April 29 episode of “Designs for Health,” the School of Public Health’s educational television show on Loma Linda Broadcasting Network.

The book—subtitled Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest—examines four areas in the world where a higher percentage of people live long lives. In addition to Loma Linda, these are the Barbagia region of Sardinia in Italy, Okinawa in Japan, and the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica.

The chapter on Loma Linda includes longevity lessons learned from Adventist Health Study-1, an epidemiological study conducted by Loma Linda University that examined the health status of 34,000 Seventh-day Adventists.

“From the Adventist Health Study, I was particularly interested to find that eating nuts regularly seems to give two to three years of life expectancy over non-nut-eaters,” Mr. Buettner told Dr. Krause.
