GIS Day teaches area schoolchildren about the growing technology of geographic information systems
Each year, LLU’s health geoinformatics laboratory opens its doors to area students in celebration of GIS Day, an international annual event to raise awareness of geographic information systems (GIS) technology. In the above photo, Akeel Leach, left, and Etienne Caroline—both seventh-graders from Valley Adventist Christian School, located in Moreno Valley—raise their hands to answer a question about GIS.
At left, Andrew Haglund, manager for health geoinformatics systems at LLU, teaches Redlands Adventist Academy ninth-graders how to use a Trimble Geo XM handheld computer. The students used the device to create a map of a portion of the LLU campus. This involved tagging the location of various landmarks, such as trees, then returning to the lab to download and symbolize the gathered data.
