MBA students place third in annual Healthcare Executives College Bowl

Master of business administration students from the Loma Linda University School of Public Health placed third in the annual Healthcare Executives of Southern California 2007 College Bowl.

This year’s event, held on April 20 at Cal State San Bernardino, included student teams from other health administration programs located in Southern California.

Winning a $500 prize were LLU team members Niklas Houmann, Aaron Marson, Mark Schneider, Tavin Boonkrang (alternate), and faculty advisor Jim Banta, PhD, MPH, assistant professor, department of health administration, School of Public Health.

“The strong placing of these students reflects well on the quality of our MBA program, since this year’s team had no special preparation, while other teams had gone through practice sessions and studied flash cards based on prior year’s questions,” Dr. Banta says.

The College Bowl is a Jeopardy-like contest, in which two teams answer a variety of questions. Each round was 14 minutes long and covered a variety of topics, including health care governance, finance, HIPAA, and general questions such as the average age of United States nurses (45 years) and the leading cause of death in the United States since 1919 (cardiovascular issues).

The winner this year was UCLA, with Cal State Long Beach (last year’s winner) taking second place. Also competing were teams from Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Northridge. All student participants are eligible for a free one-year student membership in the American College of Healthcare Executives, of which Healthcare Executives of Southern California (http://hcesocal.ache.org ) is a chapter.
