SPH collaborates with Japanese university

David Dyjack, DrPH, CIH, dean, School of Public Health, and Seth Wiafe, MPH, academic director, SPH health geoinformatics program, delivered oral presentations and signed a memorandum of understanding with Niigata University on March 12 and 13, 2008. This occurred at the 3rd Health GIS International Symposium convened at the Japanese university.
Dr. Dyjack and Mr. Wiafe were featured speakers at the symposium, which aimed to advance the art and science of geographic information systems (GIS) applications to public health and prevention. Presenters demonstrated novel and innovative approaches to evidence-based decision-making, augmented by the judicious use of technology. Examples included GIS-mediated analyses related to deployment of medical resources, emergency management, influenza monitoring, petty crime, and applications in developing countries.

Mr. Wiafe was highlighted on day two of the visit by delivering a special presentation to the Niigata University president, dean of the School of Medicine, and many others. Mr. Wiafe demonstrated the real-time analytical benefits of using GIS in emergency management. The presentation was followed by a formal signing of an educational memorandum of understanding between LLU SPH and Niigata designed to foster faculty and student exchanges, and enhance joint research.
The LLU SPH is a global leader in public health GIS applications.
Niigata University, located on the coast of the Japan Sea, has both undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a medical and dental hospital. Approximately 13,000 students study there.
