About the Conference

save the date, strengthening families

History:

Recent decades have witnessed unusual stresses on families. The alarming rates of child abuse, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and domestic violence all give evidence of a culture where the family is often in serious trouble. The Seventh-day Adventist Church and other religious bodies are also affected by some of these trends. Our churches and our surrounding communities need information and interventions for the sake of healthy families. There is a need to encourage in-depth research into the relationship between spiritual values and healthy families, including healthy parenting and healthy marriage relationship skills. A clearer understanding is needed of the challenges faced by today's family and better information about the kind of interventions, including educational programs that would be most helpful.

On November 8 and 9, 2004 an interdisciplinary team of scholars and church leaders was convened for a two-day working conference to identify significant research questions in the area of spirituality and healthy family relationships, with priority given to studies of helpful interventions. Guidelines for requesting research proposals, dispersing research funds, and ensuring accountability for the proper use of funds were established.

Strengthening Families in the 21st Century: Health, Wholeness, and Faith is a product of this research initiative, sponsoring an international conference on the topic of strengthening the health and wholeness of families.
