Spinal cord injury facts

According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, approximately 450,000 people live with SCI in the US.

There are about 10,000 new SCI's every year; the majority of them (82%) involve males between the ages of 16-30.

These injuries result from motor vehicle accidents (36%), violence (28.9%), or falls (21.2%). Quadriplegia is slightly more common than Paraplegia.

Spinal cord injury program

The rehabilitation program at Loma Linda University East Campus Hospital has a team of dedicated professionals specializing in spinal cord injury. Whether the patient has a complete cord injury or an incomplete cord injury, our team of specialists can help most patients regain more function and independence after injury.

Spinal cord injury program content

Patients in the spinal cord injury program participate in three hours of therapy per day spread throughout the day. Education for the patient regarding their type of spinal cord injury is very important. Patients are encouraged to do as much for themselves as possible to gain independence.

Family and caregivers are encouraged to become involved in therapy treatments to become familiar with the patients needs once they go home.

The rehabilitation team address issues such as: independence, wheelchair mobility, bowel and bladder training, sexuality, skin integrity, diet and exercise. Each of these plays a role in the patient's long term outcome.

For patients that have completed the inpatient rehabilitation program, we also offer outpatient rehabilitation that has state of the art equipment, convenient hours of operation, and quality therapy provided by therapists who specialize in the areas of neuro rehabilitation, orthopaedic rehabilitation, hand rehabilitation, work hardening, and pediatrics.
