Dr. Kathleen Clem (10.01.07)
I am pleased to announce that Kathleen Clem is the new chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Clem joins us from Duke University where she was instrumental in setting up an academic emergency department and served as Division Chief of Emergency Medicine over the past eight years. She brings with her an expertise in Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Bertha Escobar-Poni has accepted the invitation to serve as an associate editor of a new journal for the Association of Anatomists and American Association of Clinical Anatomists and the Human Anatomy & Physiology Society. It will be titled: Anatomical Sciences Education. Her invitation came from Dr. Richard Drake (author of Gray's Anatomy for medical students) and Dr. Wojciech Pawlina (Professor from Mayo Clinic). The new journal will provide an international forum for the exchange of ideas, opinions, innovations and research on topics related to education in the anatomical sciences of gross anatomy, embryology, histology, and neurosciences at all levels of anatomical sciences education including, undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate, allied health, medical (both allopathic and osteopathic), and dental.
Dr. Tamara Shankel (07.02.07)
Tamara Shankel, who has served as an assistant dean is now the associate dean for clinical education. She is responsible for the upperclassmen's clinical curriculum, the 6-week clinical rotation for the freshmen and the weekly half-day continuity clinic for the sophomores. Dr. Shankel oversees senior electives and Loma Linda electives that the others schools' seniors take here. She interviews every senior prior to the residency match deadline and counsels them on their strategy. Dr. Shankel has also been in charge of the didactic freshmen course in physical diagnosis. She is accountable to Lenny Werner, Senior Associate Dean for Medical Student Education. The Dean's office is delighted to have Dr. Shankel as part of the administrative team.
Dr. Kathleen Clem (07.02.07)
We are pleased to announce that Kathleen Clem has accepted the position of Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, replacing Dr. William Wittlake who served in that capacity for 10 years. Dr. Clem is the current Chief of Emergency Medicine at Duke University and is the founder of that division's residency program. She graduated from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1989 where she also finished her residency in Emergency Medicine. I would like to thank Dr. Corbett who ably served as interim chair.
Dr. Bryan Tsao (06.20.07)
I am pleased to announce that Bryan Tsao is the new chair of the Department of Neurology. Dr. Tsao graduated from LLUSM in 1996 and took his residency in Adult Neurology at Loma Linda University. He finished a fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology, Neuromuscular, and EMG. Prior to joining Loma Linda, Dr Tsao was on the full time teaching staff at Cleveland Clinic before accepting the position of chair at Loma Linda. I would like to thank Daniel Giang, now former chair of Neurology, for 11 years of excellent leadership in this position. Dan will spend more time in his administrative position in the hospital and the Designated Institutional Official.
